Before deep cleaning below are some things you need for this process.

  • The first step of deep cleaning is to take your rug out.
  • Shake it well to get out any excess dirt before washing.
  • Lay it down near your vacuum.
  • Set the “high” height setting on the vacuum and begin with the short width of the rug, don’t start with length.

2: Spraying The Water

  • After vacuuming, hang your rug vertically on a ladder-type thing to run water properly from it.
  • Take a pipe or power washer ( if you have or can borrow is better)
  • Spray water over the rug from top to bottom, it will take a few minutes to soak it well.
  • Spray upwards to downwards and believe me you will be shocked to see dirt coming off from the rugs.

3: Brushing the Rug

Now use the gentle bristles brush to rub the back and front of the rug. This will help to loosen up any stuck dirt and spray the water over it.

You can use a gentle soap to clean it but beware of using soaps because sometimes it can damage the rug’s fabric and colors. Use spot treatment if it’s needed at any place.

4: Drying The Rug

Once you are confident that you have cleaned the rug as much as possible. It is time to dry it up. Squeeze it by rolling it vertically round on the table. It will increase the drying time. Hang it vertically in a high place, in direct exposure to sunlight. It will take 12 to 24 hours to completely dry, depending on how warm it is.

When it’s done, get it back to home. You will notice a bit matted, you can use the vacuum to make it fluffy again.

Cleaning Shaggy Rugs

If you have a Bouchourite or shaggy rug, they are a bit difficult to clean because of their high pile. You need to be more gentle with them while cleaning otherwise if careless you can unravel a portion or pull it.

They are made up of fabric, not wool. So you can wash them like you wash any fabric. Use the spot treatment method if needed. Runoff water from the top to the bottom, and squeeze it as much as possible. Then let it dry in the direct sunlight.

What Is An Absolute “NO” When It Comes To Cleaning Moroccan Rugs?

Never take it to any dry cleaner. Dry cleaning is a chemical process. It weakens the wool, damages the color, and leaves an unbearable smell.
