Having Seagrass rugs in your home proves your wisdom, especially if you are a lazy person. It is the product of nature because they are made of plants, making them less expensive than other artificial rugs.

They are easy to maintain because they don’t easily welcome dirt and bacteria due to their natural vegetable and hard fibers. Another advantage is that they are stain-resistant and dirt easily removes from their weaving on cleaning.

Sand and other dirt don’t stick to the surface of sisal or seagrass rugs, rather they filter down through their weaves. If you’re searching for how to clean seagrass rugs at home and avoid damage, then the following steps might help you.

Below we will discuss effective steps and methods of cleaning and maintaining seagrass rugs at home. Let’s get started.

1: Spot Cleaning

Being mindful of spills or Pet’s accidents is the best advice for those who have seagrass and sisal rugs. In case of any stain, you can scratch it with a dull knife or with undyed tissue paper as soon as possible from the outside of the spill to inwards to avoid spreading.

Solid Spills

Scratch the spill with a nail filer or with any dull knife from outside to avoid spreading, then blot up with any paper towel.

Red Wine And Tomato sauce Stains

Apply wood alcohol with any paper towel on the stain. It will work great on the stains of beer, wine, and tomato sauce.

Greasy and Oily stains

Stains of grease and oils can be removed from the sisal and seagrass rugs by using aerosol stain/spot removers. These kinds of spot removers have cleaning liquid as well as absorbing powder. Be mindful of the instructions written on the container.

Water and Water-based Spills

Traditional Rugs with Patterns Hanging Outside

For liquid stains, overnight cover that specific part of the rug with potato flour. Next day vacuum your rug.

If the above-mentioned procedures don’t work, then take the help of a professional rug cleaner. Sometimes oils can gather underlay of the rug, in such cases various cleanings may be necessary to clean it completely.

Let your rug dry completely otherwise, dissolved dyes can stain the underlay of the carpet.

2: Pet Accidents

If you have pets, then you should be aware of methods of how to clean Seagrass rug’s pet stains.

Urine

  1. Gently rub the stain with a clean and undyed paper towel as much as possible from outside to inwards to avoid spreading.
  2. Then take an equal amount of lukewarm water and white vinegar.
  3. Apply a dampened cloth to this solution on the stain then press it with a dried paper towel.

 Feces or Vomit

  • If your pet has vomited on your seagrass or sisal rug, then scratch that part with a dull knife or nail file as soon as possible.
  • Then follow the procedure of urine stains.

Vinegar solution not only cleans the stain, it will take away the odor as well.

3: Overall Cleaning

Black and White Spray Bottle

Seagrass rugs are absorbent of moisture from the surroundings. They emit and welcome moisture, depending on their environment. Excessive humidity can change their dimension which makes them terrible.

Water-based cleaners and liquid cleaning shampoos are not recommended for natural fibers, so avoid them.

However, you can use the Spray-extraction method by using the minimum amount of liquid setting in the machine. Apply cleaning solvent with pressure then vacuum it immediately.

Repeat this process constantly to avoid your rug from being wet. Keep in mind that removal of all moisture is not possible. Due to the fine and continuous application of this process, watermarks will not appear on the rugs.

Before applying this method, make sure that the glue you use to cling down your rug is not water-soluble.

4: Normal Maintenance

Do regular vacuuming of your rugs. It will help in their maintenance. Always use a brush Vacuum for this purpose. Don’t use a beater vacuum because it can damage the rug’s fiber.

Several times vacuuming the rugs from both sides, will help prevent the soil build-up, fade away the stains caused by spilled liquid, and give a new life to your rug.

A light water spray will strengthen the natural fibers and enhance their shine if exposed to dull and less humid weather.  A light spray can be given by light sprinkling, damp brushing, mopping with a clean cloth, or using any device that would give an even water application.

This minimum exposure to water will tighten up fibers slightly as they dry up. Must vacuum and clean your seagrass rugs before spraying, otherwise, it will leave dirt or soil stains underlay the matting if dissolved.

Vacuuming Bounding Rugs

Take special care when vacuuming the binding borders of rugs. Run your vacuum in the direction, the binding is sewn. Don’t let your vacuum sit or catch the binding borders, it can damage it.

We are again repeating that don’t use a beater vacuum ever because it’s hard to repair rugs due to improper care.
